Target Field Video Shoot

Recently, I produced a video for the Minnesota Twins Fantasy Camp and the teams massage therapist, Kelli Quist.  Portions of the production were made in the Twins training room and on the grass in center field.  To check out the final video visit:

Over The Edge

Last Friday I had the opportunity to photograph one of the more unique events that I can remember.  For eight hours my team (Preston Palmer, Matt Blewitt and I) photographed participants rappelling from the 24 story Hyatt roof to help raise funds for the National Youth Recovery Foundation.  For a couple of weeks prior to the event I found myself having nightmares about dealing with the height.  They started pretty much after hearing the edge of the roof is just 14 inches.  I still get a little uncomfortable just mentioning that fact.  I probably should have done less homework leading up to the day.  Anyway, I eventually put on the hard hat and stepped into the elevator alone to face my fear.  The final set of steps to the top are concrete. With the bright sunlight shining in through an open door at the top I could almost hear "Stairway To Heaven" in my head as I reluctantly pushed upward.  Like any challenge, it's the first step that can be the toughest.  In this case that step was over the threshold and on to the roof.  Oh yes, the view is spectacular indeed, however at that moment it wasn't high on the priority list.  Lucky for me, a designated path had been established and all I had to do was follow the yellow tape.  Eventually, I crossed the roof to the "launch area" and began to feel a bit more comfortable among fellow adventure seekers.  I actually scanned the horizon and soaked in the beautiful day.  I shot some images, partly because it was my job and partly just to prove I could handle my fear of heights.  No, I did not overcome the fear, I just learned that I could deal with it.  Ah, the things we do for love.

Super Moon Timelapse

Low clouds hindered my moon project tonight.  Also, failed to keep in mind that it was not going to climb straight up.  Suprise!

Puppy Power

Puppies took over at the recently relocated Westonka Animal Hospital on Saturday.  The new facility in Mound allows more room for special events, like Puppy Playtime.  Although the pups enjoyed climbing and playing with each other, their favorite activity was chowing down on squirt cheese!  This fun event is held on certain Saturdays each month.  Call the clinic or check out their website for more details.

This morning I finished the K-9 Graduation book

K-9 Demonstration, Thursday

This year the annual St. Paul Canine Graduation was especially poignant. The highlight for me, was seeing St. Paul K-9 officer, David Longbehn demonstrate the talents of his new police dog, "Duke".  After all that this man has been through in recent years it was incredible to see this pair in action.  It felt somewhat like the Phoenix rising from the flames.  Indeed, it was a beautiful day for new opportunities and new challenges.  Officer Longbehn said it best when he talked about his new K-9 partner with a reporter, "This is my last new beginning".

Spirit Lake Afternoon

Wednesday afternoon I created a short timelapse at one of my favorite fishing spots up on the Iron Range.  It was a gorgeous afternoon, with ice out and the trees beginning to bud.  Although it was just a quick trip, I had a great time visiting my mom.  While I was in Chisholm I stopped by the cemetery where so many of my relatives are buried.  I always visit my dad.

Photographed the Swarm game last night

I had an amazing time at the Excel Center last night photographing the Minnesota Swarm final regular season game for the Minnesota Sports Report.  Although the home team dropped this one, the crowd of over 12,000 was enthusiastic right to the end.  Keep an eye on this sport!  It is most certainly the next big thing!

Heavy Hockey Weekend

It was a great weekend for hockey in Minnesota.  Between the Wild, the State Tournament, the men's and women's Gopher hockey teams all the way down in size to the "Mites" in Minnetonka, hockey was everywhere.

Golden Gloves Boxing At Medina

This past Tuesday evening I photographed boxing at Medina Ballroom.  As a photographer, I find it a challenging sport to capture.  First of all, the camera wants to focus on the ropes, secondly the ref is continuously moving in and out of the way and third, the lighting is extrememly low.  Now throw in the fact that the participants are throwing punches at lightening speed.  This is one sport where the term "spray and pray" definately applies.
My personal feelings about boxing's violent nature does not mean that it is off-limits as a subject.  My photojournalistic instincts kick in and I just try to tell the story fairly and without bias.

Thanks to Deb and Brian for the opportunity.

Packed House For Wayzata vs. Edina Hockey

In all my years of covering Wayzata hockey at Plymouth Ice Arena I can not recall ever seeing the place filled with so many fans.  It was standing room only and even getting a spot at the railing was a challenge.  It was obvious that the game meant a great deal to Hornets and Trojan fans alike, but beyond that, hockey fans that had no dog in the fight turned out just to see what could be a preview of a playoff game down the line.  Unfortunately for the Trojan faithful the game went Edina's way as Wayzata came up short by a final score of 5-4.

Nationally Speaking

Yesterday we had the pleasure of working with Holly Zelinsky again.  She assembled some of the most wonderful national speakers imagineable.  Here is a grab and grin with Amelia Santaniello and Paul Douglas.
